The last couple of weeks

We went on our last camping trip of the season and ended up going up to the Idaho/Utah border. It was so much fun and we were able to fin some great old buildings. For example this old dance hall.....

The the local Naf Bar - this was literally in the middle on nowhere

Dusty of course found a pond to search in - that's him being attacked by a fly while looking for frogs if you're not sure what's going on

This was me being all proud of my fence opening skills!

And showing off our new tent - our last one served us well for 5 years but the zipper broke so we now have a new huge tent - it's awesome and you can even stand up in it!!!

The first night camping was so nice by a little brook on top of the mountain in Idaho

Dusty building our fire - as you can see there weren't any rocks so we improvised with bottles - what can I say, at least it worked!

In the morning we hiked up to the top and this is us looking a little disheveled after the hike!

We realized half way through the day that we only had a quarter of a tank left so we were headed up to the nearest town when we found this general store near the city of rocks. We went inside and it was so cool - the longest operating store in Idaho - it even had the original cash register on display. I love places like this and we were able to stock up on food and gas so we were back in business and able to go further into the desert.

This was our next stop by a little lake - we were enjoying our newly purchased cheese on a nice toasted roll - yum!

We then found another little general store and had to stop. You know ice cold soda just tastes so good from these places!!

We then headed to the sun tunnels - I guess this is what people get up to when they've been in the desert too long. There were no signs to it - we just saw it on the map and decided to find it.

The holes are supposed to show the constellations but they were much more fun to climb on!

Dusty made it further up than me - I need to work on my upper body strength a little more!

They were so fun to take picture of - we have tons of weird ones but this is my favorite....

Just don't ask!

Dusty's impression of a crazy local

This was us trying to find a camp site for the night.

It got a little sketchy as the jeep nearly rolled but she was a champ and made it through!

Cooking corn for supper - we were up on the rocks and it started popping so I had to run and rescue it before it became popcorn!

It may not look good but it was delicious!

After having salmon rolls (brought all the way from Seattle by Dusty on his last trip) and corn for dinner we hiked up to what we thought might be a mine.

It turned out to be a cave but the view was still worth it...

After getting home we had the boys over for Tim's birthday weekend

They were so excited to open his presents - James was just as into it as Tim

James also had a game that Saturday and although we're not huge football fans - it was fun to see him learning and tackling the little kids (his favorite part)!

Tim and Dusty were able to entertain themselves with the parachute guys he got for his birthday
How cute is he in his little outfit....

We then went to Grandma's house for more cake and presents.

They both fell in love with the paper instruments

I think all in all it was a fun couple of weeks :)

That handstand picture of Chuck looks like he's balancing one of the tubes on his butt. Radical pictures. James is old enough to play tackle football?

I'm sorry that was the last camping trip of the year for you guys. What will you do in the fall/winter? I'm intrigued. I think it's cute that James is in football. I would be too scared to let my kid play. I'm a weenie, though...we've already established this.

My kids have told me about the paper "jams" or whatever. Ugh. Why can't I invent something really stupid that kids would love? Yet another idea taken from me.

Again, what a fun spontaneous trip! You make exploring look fun cause you find cool stuff! Love the pics - your boys are getting enormous! I think think they're 4 years old-ish in my mind...

Holly - There is such cool stuff in the desert! The kids really are getting up there, Tim will be 10 next year!!!
Amy - we'll let you know if he has one this weekend although it's up in Alpine.

What a great way to end the summer.
I love the kind of trips when you just jump in the car and go.
Great pics, looked like so much fun.
